Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Notary Public?

A notary public is a public official whose main powers include administrating oaths and attesting to signatures, both important and effective ways to minimize fraud in legal documents.

What forms of Identification do Notary Publics accept?

A valid photo identification card is required, in order for a document to be notarized. One of the following will do, so long as it is current or issued within the past 5 years:

  1. State issued driver’s license or identification card.
  2. U.S. passport.
  3. Foreign passport stamped by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS).
  4. Alien registration card, acceptable only for notarization of INS forms.
  5. U.S. military identification card with your signature applied.
  6. Driver’s license officially issued in Mexico or Canada.
  7. Inmate ID issued by the California Department of Corrections, but only to identify prisoners in custody.
What is a Certified Loan Signing Agent?

A Certified Loan Signing Agent is a Notary Public who specializes in loan document signings. We are authorized to perform the signing portion of the loan transaction. To achieve certification, the Signing Agent must go through additional, comprehensive training and education and pass an extensive exam. The Signing Agent accepts and provides pre-appointment prep-work of the loan documents, personally couriers the documents to the borrower’s location, ensures the proper execution and notarization of the loan documents, and returns the executed loan package to the Escrow Office in a timely manner.

Copy Certifications or Certified Copies

Washington Notaries are allowed to provide Copy Certifications or Notarized Copies of documents. The process is simple and requires that the notary, be presented with the original document and allowed to make the copy of the document to insure it is the true and exact copy. Then our Notaries will use a special “Copy Certification” stamp and will notarize the document as a Certified Copy. West Seattle Notaries have in our basket of tricks, that special Copy Certified stamp. Not all notaries have it so ask and make sure they do.

Why pay for travel fees?

How much is your time worth? Mobile or traveling notaries make you life easier when all it takes is a call to set up an appointment on YOUR time and YOUR location. Normally you have to take time out of your day. Then you have to travel to a notary location and hope that the notary is in and not at lunch or out sick that day or you don’t have to wait in a long line. Also, if you have multiple documents or multiple people the number of notarizations can easily be more than four or five. Notarizations normally cost $10 per signature notarized but with us at West Seattle Notary if you are in our area then travel fees are reduced with each signature over four. In addition for our West Seattle businesses we can invoice for proper records and easy payments.

Are you familiar with Loan or Real Estate documents?

Our notaries are not just Notary Publics but trained and certified Loan Signing Agents. That means we have high powered printers capable of printing our legal and letter sized documents. We are very familiar with multiple Lenders documents and can help you walk through all the forms insuring they are all filled out and signed correctly. Did you know that when a document asks for initials that the proper number of initials must be there and that depends on the legal signature line. If the signature has you middle name or a Jr. then those initials must be there. Modifications of any document is typically a no-no but the trained Loan Signing agent knows what to do.

How to keep travel fees down?

Mobile or traveling notaries offer the service of coming to You at Your location on Your time. Travel fees depend on your location plus notarization fees. To keep the fees down it’s important to find a notary that is geographically close! Sometime if you do an internet search you get a company that is not close but who has put a lot of effort to be listed at the top. These companies charge more since they then need to sub-contract a local notary OR they travel the distance and then charge you for it. The best way to find a notary in your local area is to search for “Notary in West Seattle” (Georgetown, White Center, Fauntleroy etc..) or use maps to search for Notary and look for one nearby. Also make sure to ask the notary where they are coming from to insure you get a local notary.
